Book Review: 'The Short Story Of Women Artists'

Writer's picture: Isabelle LillianIsabelle Lillian

An honest review of one of Susie Hodge's classics, detailing the female experience, accomplishments and trials in the world of art.

An Empowering Read

As you may have noticed from the title 'The Short Story Of Women Artists' highlights female artists who left their mark on the art industry.

Whilst in the past, female artists were shunned upon for simply wanting to learn and discouraged to explore their creative skills, this did not stop them from creating works of art that to this day have such a strong impact on art culture. Female accomplishments back in the day were disguised as their husbands' or fathers', however this book tells you the story of the woman behind the masterpiece and her journey to becoming a great artist.

Insightful and Easy-going

For those who read for leisure, the idea of learning new information may seem overpowering, however the layout of this book is perfect for learning something new about the history of art in a fun way. Susie Hodge writes a little about everything. From different eras of art, to female artists that stood the test of time, to iconic masterpieces, Hodge is able to encapsulate the reader by allowing them to absorb the stories behind each artist without going into too much depth, making this book a light read. This book is a pleasant midway between those eager to learn and those who enjoy a less intense read. In fact, the way this book is laid out, give you freedom to read it however you want. Whether this be chronologically or randomly flicking through to see what catches your eye, you can read this book at any occasion.

Great For Art Lovers

This book is an artists best friend for inspiration. As an artist myself looking to explore new mediums and styles, I was able to flick through the pages of the book that discussed different eras of art such as Art Deco and find my source of inspiration within these pages. Looking at different art styles and learning how they came to be is truly inspiring and excites me to learn more, perhaps incorporate new elements into my artwork.

Of course, you do not need to be an artist to enjoy this book. If you are simply interested in the following topics then this book should be added to your next read as Hodge covers the following:

  • History of art

  • Female empowerment & achievement

  • Breakthroughs in art
